Diligent planning and pre-production work can make all the difference in keeping a book printing project on track in terms of time, product quality, and customer satisfaction.
Our prepress services are focused on making the initial steps of the print production process as efficient and successful as possible. By putting the work in on the front end of the book production process, the result is much more likely to meet client expectations and conform to project specifications.
The Prepress Process
The prepress process begins when clients provide us with their product files, which are eventually turned into books or other print projects. We then put the files through a rigorous error-checking process – looking for commonly overlooked errors such as the type not being set to the right color (color management) or page trims being set incorrectly for the type of book binding selected – before setting up individual pages for the appropriate offset printing press or digital press.
During this stage, we also make sure that files are compatible with our various workflow systems, so that problems do not arise further into the process. If issues are found, we have proven methods for resolving them quickly and keeping production orders moving forward.
We encourage all customers to send test files in advance of a new job. This allows us to troubleshoot any problems before they might affect the project’s schedule.
Proofing
After initial setup and troubleshooting is complete, projects move into the proofing process. The contract proofs – books or other printed material that are color-certified proofs which can be used for color matching as well as image quality and content checks – are approved by our clients and then added to our carefully maintained proof storage library.
We use the Kodak InSite Prepress Portal system to manage proofing. That system is a web portal to the prepress environment that lets Core Publishing Solutions and their customers work with print jobs over the Internet. Prepress Portal helps to manage the proofing, correction, and approval process so that it is as efficient as possible.
